Letter Rip

We love letters. Maybe it’s because our grandmas always used to tape a quarter to our birthday cards when we were little, and we now have this Pavlovian thing going on. Regardless, we want to hear from you. Sing our praises, bust our chops, or just tell us what’s on your mind. Send your thoughts to editor@americanwaymag.com.

POOL RULES
I read with interest Dan Carlinsky’s report on the new Parisian swimming pool [“Going Swimmingly,” October 15], an attraction that I will definitely try out on my next visit to the City of Lights. On page 46, under the heading “If You Swim,” it is stated: “Please note: All pools require swimmers to wear a swim cap.” This note prompts me to tell the following story.
A couple of years ago, on a very hot summer day, I went to a Parisian public pool at the edge of the Bois de Boulogne that was recommended by friends. There was no requirement there for short-haired men to wear a swim cap. However, I was not allowed to enter the pool in my bathing trunks. I was advised that all men must wear Speedo-like swimwear. Since there was no shop on the premises to buy the required garment, because it was so hot that day, and because the water looked so refreshing, I went back into the locker room and turned my trunks inside out, with the lining on the outside. Looking like a clown, I was then allowed into the water. I was later advised that many pools in Paris have this bizarre requirement. Readers of American Way may benefit from this warning.

Daniel Gadish, Boston, Massachusetts

Dear Daniel: You’re a braver soul than we are, resigning yourself to looking a little silly in the name of some cool-water refreshment. It took us a long time just to get used to wearing those swim caps in public.

FLOOR IT!
As I sit on the apron at Reagan reading American Way, I write you this quick note of thanks. Earlier this year, in your May 15 issue [UpFront], you had a brief item that featured carpeting from InterfaceFlor.

After seeing that item, I checked the company’s website and found out that their headquarters was nearby. After meeting their staff, viewing their catalog, and checking samples, we purchased flooring for our redone family room. Between two boys and a beagle, we’re giving it a good workout, but it looks great and holds up well. Thanks, American Way, for helping out!

Fritz Golman, River Forest, Illinois

Dear Fritz: It sounds like not even Richard Simmons on his most ambitious day could put your new floor to the test more exhaustively than your family has. Be sure to keep your eye on American Way for all of your home-furnishing needs.

SHHHHHHH!
As a frequent flier of American Airlines, I have enjoyed your excellent biweekly publication for many years. I used to collect issues of the magazine, but because of the volume and lack of space, I finally donated them to a library.

Congratulations on your superb anniversary issue [September 1]. The look back at 1966 brought back so many memories. As a volunteer at the Carnegie Public Library of San Juan, I have been donating two copies of American Way to the library’s periodical section whenever I travel. I bring them my copy and an additional one that I rescue from a passenger who does not wish to take it with them.

American Way has become very popular with the library’s patrons, and whenever I return from a trip, they always ask, “Where’s the American Way magazine?” Thanks again for a job well done.

Antonio Rivera-Torres, Carolina, Puerto Rico

Dear Antonio: We love libraries. We also love being the star attraction in one. Which means your letter has made us very happy. You might even say it makes us want to “check out” the Carnegie Public Library.
