Letter Rip
We love letters. Maybe it’s because our
grandmas always used to tape a quarter to our birthday cards when we
were little, and we now have this Pavlovian thing going on. Regardless,
we want to hear from you. Sing our praises, bust our chops, or just
tell us what’s on your mind. Send it to editor@americanwaymag.com.
DASHING AROUND DFW I’ve
got a great travel tip for passengers starting and ending their trips
at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and parking at one of the
airport terminals. Since more people are checking bags these days, it
can be problematic if you park at one terminal for the outbound flight
and your incoming flight brings you to a different terminal.
My
solution? Rather than waiting for your luggage before retrieving your
car, it’s faster to deplane, go get your car, and then drive back to
retrieve your luggage. By using the Skylink or even walking, you can
stay within the secure part of the airport and quickly get to the
terminal where your car is. The mistake is deplaning and crossing
through to Baggage Claim. Once there, it’s hard to get to another
terminal without using the Terminal Link Shuttle (for which you must
wait outside in the elements and then cruise other terminals with
dozens of people, all while dragging your luggage).
My plan is
faster and more comfortable, and it makes your bag easy to pick out
when you go to claim it because the crowds and amount of bags have
thinned. I’ll admit, at the risk of looking like I have no life, that
I’ve tested and timed both options. Jay Hohfeler, Coppell, Texas
Dear
Jay: We believe you have a life, and we’re impressed that it includes
time spent figuring out ways to help your fellow travelers. But your
note has us wondering: What if you arrive at Terminal A when your car
is parked at Terminal B and your boss, whose car is at the office, is
due to come in at Terminal C? Then what?
I LOVE L.A. Amanda
Peet’s interview about Los Angeles [September 1] elicited many fond
memories of my years in the City of Angels. Thoughts of late-night runs
to Canter’s Deli and hiking in Runyon Canyon only start the list.
After
arriving into American Airlines’ remodeled Terminal 4 at LAX many
times, I always welcomed the sight of the oil rigs on La Cienega. Thank
you for your story. Ryan Hall, San Diego, California
Dear
Ryan: Sounds like you had many good times in L.A., but were they ever
as good as the fun you could have imagining all the money you’d pocket
if you struck it rich off of those oil rigs? Here in Texas, we daydream
about becoming the next Jed Clampett all the time.
HIGH-FLYING HUMOR American Way
offers some of the best written, most interesting, most varied, and
best-edited articles I have ever read, both in the air and on terra
firma. The inclusion of humor — and not just mere sarcasm — in your
stories helped me travel more comfortably during my most recent trips
on American Airlines, particularly given the fact that I was traveling
due to a death in my family. The articles exhibited thoughtfulness and
intelligence.
I’d also like to add that after I spent a weekend
traveling aboard a different airline (by necessity, not by choice) and
reading what that airline believed to be an in-flight magazine, I can
say American Way safely assumes superiority in this category.
Thank you for your effort to bring style and journalism to the air.
Keep up the great writing and editing. Marybeth T. Miller, Canton, Michigan
Dear
Marybeth: We’re happy to receive high marks for humor, sensitivity, and
intelligence. Now we just have to work on perfecting our triple axel,
and we’ll be golden.editor@americanwaymag.com.
