Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula | Salmon | Kenai River | American Airlines

Got Fish?

by Kevin Raub

Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula is home to a few fish, but these aren’t your grandfather’s catfish. Considering the region’s King Salmon can grow as big as a sixth grader (the world record weight is a whopping 97 pounds), reeling one of these babies in isn’t exactly a breezy day on the river. From late May to late July, anglers of all ilk fight vicious battles on the Kenai River to catch a batch, making that salmon sushi at day’s end a well-fought reward. American Airlines begins seasonal service to Anchorage in June, (800) 433-7300; Alaska Wildlife Adventures, (800) 478-4100, www.alaskasportfish .com. — K.R.
