ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL | cellular telephone | MP3 | PDA

Sorry, Dad. Now, It's Both.

by Marc Boisclair

EVERY PARENT SINCE ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL HAS WARNED THE KIDS, "IT'S A TELEPHONE, NOT A TOY."

Audiovox CMP3 (around $300)

Why just whistle on the job? This MP3 phone lets you download and play back your favorite digital tunes, in between calling clients, of course. In work mode, the CMP3 features a calendar; a 200-name, 400-number phone directory; a voice recorder; and two-way messaging, which comes in handy for scheduling lunches and appointments. To let the music play, pop in the optional memory card
(a 16MB, $60 version holds four songs, while the 32MB, $100 one carries up to eight). www.audiovox.com
Ericsson Smartphone R380 World (around $600)
A cell phone and hand-held device morph into one in this pocket-size Smartphone. For starters, there’s a PDA (using Symbian’s EPOC operating system) with a touch-screen menu, Web browser, built-in modem, and infrared port for syncing with a PC. You can send e-mails, dictate memos, dial and answer via voice control, and create audible reminders. Best of all, though, is where you can talk — across five continents and in some 120 countries. www.ericsson.com
