"Scottsdale is kind of the boardwalk of
Phoenix, loaded with
high-end restaurants and shops. They've got a lot of nice
Southwestern art galleries there. Biltmore Fashion Park in Phoenix
is a perfect place to shop if that's what you're into. I don't shop
a lot, but this is a cool space with terrific shops, both local and
national. If I'm not mistaken, there is a weirdly high number of
sunglasses stores. However, my brother just told me that it's 109
in Phoenix, so maybe that's simply good business."
Golf
"The Boulders is on the top of my list.
Arizona has some of the
best courses in the country. They are usually very well-designed, a
little narrower. Obviously, if you go off the track, you're in the
desert, and, as I've mentioned before, the desert can be a lonely
place. So hit 'em long and straight is my advice for anybody taking
on an Arizona
golf course. I'm always kind of baffled by the
maintenance on courses in the desert, because you would think
they'd be so compromised because of the heat and the conditions,
but it's really the opposite. They're incredibly well-groomed. They
take golf very seriously in Arizona."
Culture
"Taliesin West is the headquarters of the Frank Lloyd Wright
Foundation and school of architecture. It's hard to believe that
the Wright tradition is continuing right in the heart of
Scottsdale, Arizona. It's not the city that necessarily pops into
your head when you think of
Frank Lloyd Wright. The Hall of Flame
Museum is the firefighters museum. And the Buffalo Museum of
America has all of this paraphernalia about the buffalo, which is,
of course, a great part of the Arizona tradition."
