The Toy
by
Ben HewittThere is little better in this life than an afternoon at the beach, cool drinks close at hand, and a Frisbee partner who can place throws so precisely that your behind-the-back and between-the-legs catches look like moves born of instinct. Countless attempts have been made to update and improve on the classic Frisbee. But as with any pastime so steeped in personal history and tradition, there’s little reason to stray from the versatile 160-gram Wham-O “World-Class Freestyle” (about 10 bucks at any stocked sporting or general store, or online at www.johnhansenco.com/whamo3.htm). It flies straight on breezy days, hits the palm with a satisfying “thunk,” packs into a suitcase with ease, and costs less than a large pizza. Which, by the way, won’t fly nearly as well.
