Check the price tag on a DVD recorder and you may be pleasantly surprised. A machine that cost $1,000 in 2001 now sells for about a third of that. Most recorders now support DVD-R and one of the rewritable formats (DVD-RAM or DVD-RW), too. For heavy loads of data, nothing else comes close.

Assets: Inexpensive and easy to install, this upgrade to your current DVD recorder includes all cables, software, and media, and supports most formats.
Liabilities: It’s an upgrade kit — which means you need to own the hardware already.
Bottom line: If you invested in an older model, turbo-charge it with this advance.

Assets: This sixth-generation machine from an industry leader supports most leading formats — all but DVD-RAM — from 2X up to 16X. Translation: Versatility.
Liabilities: All-in-one may not be necessary for a simple backup system or presentation downloads.
Bottom line: Well-reviewed machine at a good price lets you tailor the format to the occasion.
