Letter Rip
We love letters. Maybe it's because our grandmas always used to
tape a quarter to our birthday cards when we were little, and we
now have this Pavlovian thing going on. Regardless, we want to hear
from you. Sing our praises, bust our chops, or just tell us what's
on your mind. Send it to
editor@americanwaymag.com.
LUXURY ISN'T EVERYTHING
I'm not sure why I started reading your
Air Mail section.
Was it the "Letter Rip" that caught my eye? The note about
grandmas? Or the "Yo! Free Stuff"? I have to admit that getting
something free would be cool.
You changed the overall format of the magazine, and I find it more
fun and informative. I really enjoyed your piece on Sandra Oh ["Oh,
Barcelona!" August 1]. All of your writers should strive to capture
what
Mark Seal did in this interview. For the first time, a
celebrity's interview made me want to visit the location they were
talking about. Plus, I got the sense that Oh really enjoyed
exploring the city. This may be the first article that listed
inexpensively and moderately priced places for lodging and
dining.
Outside of
business travel and expense accounts, it shouldn't
always be about staying in fancy hotels, eating in the most
expensive restaurants, and shopping. Traveling is also about going
places that are different from where you live and experiencing new
cultures,
food, and sights. I'd rather read about someone "shooting
some noodles" (my father's term for eating a bowl of noodles) at a
sidewalk noodle stand in
Bangkok or walking down the street in the
morning eating fried bananas, pineapple, and a Coke in preparation
for a long hot day of sightseeing. Then, of course, there are all
those great little thatch-roofed bars on beaches all over the
world, like one of my favorites near Tulum,
Mexico. I've been to
nice resorts, but I also like to go off the beaten path.
