Chicago | 1930’s-era Shanghai supper club | Clematis Avenue | Las Vegas

Exotic Edibles

by Elaine Glusac

Globetrot via these three new restaurants-cum-travelogues

CHICAGO: Shanghai Terrace
Peninsula Chicago, 108 E. Superior., (312) 337-2888
Building on its Asian roots, the luxe new Peninsula hotel transports diners to a sexy 1930’s-era Shanghai supper club and cocktail lounge. Chinese red lacquer trim and silver accents set the scene of the city’s only restaurant spilling onto a terrace above North Michigan Avenue. Waitresses serve dim sum and other Asian delights to international sophisticates.

LAS VEGAS: Nobhill, MGM Grand
3799 Las Vegas Blvd. S., (702) 891-3110
Chef Michael Mina of Aqua teams with hot designer Tony Chi to create a snug San Francisco eatery. Named for the ritzy city enclave, Nobhill conjures up culinary California with fresh-baked sourdough bread, organic produce, and a tasting menu of famous dishes from Bay Area restaurants, including lamb chops from the now-shuttered Narsai’s. The roving whipped-potato cart scoops five flavors of creamy spuds right onto your plate.

WEST PALM BEACH: Mignon
1 N. Clematis Ave., (561) 659-1442
The Dallas-area-born French steakhouse Mignon spins off a South Florida sibling, bringing its Paris-in-the-’60s chic to popular Clematis Avenue. Cool jazz tunes, multi-colored wall tiles, oversize mirrors, and plush velvet banquettes collectively evoke a beau monde domain. Slip in for steak tartare and Caesar salad, both prepared table- side, along with steak frites, house-cured salmon, oven-roasted oysters, and other contemporary bistro dishes.
