According to Portland Trail Blazers nutrition consultant Ruth Carey, RD, CSSD, LD, a professional basketball player consumes 4,500 calories a day -- nearly twice that of the average American. Of course, they manage to avoid packing on the pounds because when they’re not playing games or practicing, they’re weight training in the gym. But what about those of us who don’t run up and down a court as part of our job description? How would we consume 4,500 calories in 24 hours? Here’s a possible start (and unless you own a gymnasium, we suggest buying some pants with a stretch waistband).
