Dallas Mavericks | NBA | Mexico | Eduardo Najera | United States

Mavs Man

by James Mayfield

MAVS MAN

The 2002-03 NBA season doesn’t start until later this month, but Eduardo Najera, 26, already has a lot to be happy about. The 6-foot-8-inch Dallas Mavericks forward is in top form. Last season, he proved invaluable off the bench and showed the world that the Mavs men are contenders by helping the team advance to the conference semifinals.

AW: What did you do in the off-season?
EN:
When I was in Dallas, I worked out, getting ready for the season. I also spent time in Mexico where I have camps that I do there every summer. I worked with kids, traveled the country, and stayed involved in the community there. I enjoy going back and giving back whatever I can. It’s my home.

AW: Are you a big celebrity there?
EN:
I don’t know about being a big celebrity, but … they get really excited to see someone from their country playing the game of basketball in the United States. There are a lot of NBA fans in Mexico and they have supported me through my entire career.

AW: What are your personal goals this season?
EN:
I want to develop more as a player, both physically and mentally. I will do whatever it takes on the court to bring a championship to Dallas. I love defense and that is where I try to make my presence felt. I want to get in there, play hard, and help my teammates take it to the next level. When they call my number I want to be ready.
