WHEN LOVE IS IN THE AIR
Stay calm if love blooms at work this Valentine’s Day, advises Dennis M. Powers, business law professor at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, and author of The Office Romance (Amacom, 1998). The fear of sexual harassment is worse than the reality. Do watch for signs of trouble, but also try to respect lovebirds’ privacy. See that you have a fair, written company policy and that managers and employees know what’s in it. Distinguish between boss-subordinate and peer-peer romances — they’re different. If problems erupt during a breakup, have couples mediate. And keep it in perspective. Romance is a less-critical employment issue.
