Derby | Bob Baffert

Sports

by MARK KIENZLE

Trainer Bob Baffert has lifted the Kentucky Derby trophy in the winner’s circle three times, his horses have won two legs of the Triple Crown on four occasions, and he has thrice earned the Eclipse Award as outstanding trainer.

AW: How do you handle two or three entries in the Derby?

BB:
We’re used to running multiple entries in most big races around the country. We’re set up for that, and our clients know I’m trying to win it and give every horse the opportunity to win.

AW: Given the bond you develop with the horses you train, do you get a good feeling for how a particular horse might run      on a given day?

BB:
I can usually tell when one horse may be doing a little bit better than another one. It’s all timing, you know.

AW: What do you consider your most satisfying accomplishment?

BB:
I think winning the Derby three times. It’s the most exciting and biggest race … and it gets better every time.
