Letter Rip

You once said you were going to try to cut down on your use of personal pronouns because of the readers who are keeping track. I’m writing to ask you: Please don’t. I read American Way because of your personality, and because you give us the gift of sharing yourself. Even done with humor like you do, it is truly a gift. Please don’t take that away.

Could the argument that you shouldn’t inject your personality be a sexist one? Would there be as much criticism if the editor in chief were a man who wrote in the first person? Would the criticism even exist if magazine editing hadn’t been dominated by men for so long? You’re a pioneer just being a female editor in chief. Continue to be a pioneer, and continue to share yourself with us.

Ben Atherton-Zeman, Acton, Massachusetts

Dear Ben: You had us at hello, but you lost us at “Kate.” Generally, flattery will get you everywhere, but it works better if you get the person’s name right. For future letters, you can simply address them to “Your Majesty.” She loves that — trust us. All that said, Sherri, Kate, or whatever you want to call her, loved your letter and the thought you obviously put into it. It also gave her a great idea: She should hire a personal assistant (named Kate, of course) to write her column for her.
