Ely Callaway | California | DAVID FROST WINES | President
The 19th Hole

Callaway is a familiar name in golf circles, and the man behind the brand was the late Ely Callaway, former
president of Burlington Industries. Back in 1974, when the California wine industry was in its burgeoning adolescence, Callaway took a chance and founded a winery in Southern California’s Temecula region, between
Los Angeles and
San Diego. Callaway was a pioneer there, but today the region has 15 wineries.
In the early 1980s, Callaway sold his winery to spirits giant Hiram Walker (later part of the global behemoth Allied Domecq). The Temecula climate seems to favor Rhônes over whites, but for a time the new owners made only white wine at Callaway. Even with reds forming part of their portfolio now, Callaway’s Sauvignon Blanc is still one of the most successful wines in the lineup. The 2000 is smooth and melony with go-the-distance flavors and the balance of a well-made 9-iron.
