TEST YOUR FITNESS – MYTH KNOWLEDGE

Which of these fitness beliefs are true, and which ones are myths?

1. Your metabolism slows down when you hit your 30s.

2. You have to exercise uninterrupted for at least 30 minutes to get any benefit.

3. Strength training such as lifting weights won’t hurt your golf game.

4. Drinking water helps you lose weight.

5. Diet-and-fitness programs for celebs and professional athletes probably aren’t suitable for most people.

Answers: 1. True. True, that is, in the absence of proper nutrition and exercise to stimulate your metabolism. 2. Myth. You can do 10 minutes at a time, for a total of 30 minutes, and get similar benefits. 3. True. Top professional golfers do strength training these days. 4. Part myth. Dehydration may lead to weight gain, but there’s no cause-and-effect relationship between weight loss and drinking more water than proper hydration requires. 5. True. Biggest Loser–type crash weight-loss programs, for example, are unrealistically intense for most of us.
