Golf | Sun City | Georgetown | real estate | Barton Creek
Matthew Mcconaughey's Austin
by
Mark SealGOLF "My mother lives at Del Webb's
Sun City retirement community
in
Georgetown. I go out there and play some
golf with her. They've
got two courses, and it's pretty nice. The back nine at Sun City is
damned good. Even if you get off the box big, you gotta swing some
7-irons. They didn't pinch up on the
real estate, on the dirt,
which a lot of these places do. The Hills Country Club has a
Nicklaus course with a killer par 3 on 7, their signature hole.
Barton Creek has a couple of good golf courses - a Fazio course,
and they just built another one that's really fine. There's a lot
of undulation, and they wound the course through the cliffs."
EXCURSION "Take the Canyon Lake exit off I-35 when you're going
south toward
San Antonio to a campground called White Water. It's
right there by the bridge in New Braunfels. I got introduced to it
while I was there in college. With summer school, you'd take three
hours of classes, just so you could stay in
Austin. So you could go
down there and skip class and go float the river. We pitch a tent
at the riverside, and you get your tubes there, plus one extra tube
for the cooler of beer. So you camp at night, party on the river,
and then the next morning you get up and go catch about a four-hour
float. River rats and that river, that's sort of a subculture all
its own. It's one of the most relaxing things in all of Central
Texas."
