Powering Down
-
4-15-2009
One of the dirty little secrets of our networked, computerized “new economy” is that it actually uses an awful lot of old-fashioned power, most of which comes from coal and other polluting sources. The data centers that make search engines, online shopping, and long-distance business collaboration possible use 40 times more energy than regular office buildings, sucking up one to two percent of the nation’s electricity.

Where Was That Photo Taken Again?
-
10-15-2008
It was only a matter of time before technology eventually improved upon those blurry time-and-date stamps that so frequently label our snapshots as having been taken several years in the future. Granted, the new digital application called geotagging may not offer such time-traveling possibilities, but it does promise to change the way we collect, store, and view our media.

I HAVEN’T TALKED to Aunt Patti in several years, not since Granny, her sister, began suffering severely from the effects of Alzheimer’s disease and consequently forgot who most of us were. Growing up, I saw her only when she stopped by Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a day or two and visited Granny; she always demanded beans and corn bread for dinner because they reminded her of home. Otherwise, I came to know her mostly through Granny’s memories. That’s not surprising, though, because Aunt Patti, better known as Patti Page, the Singing Rage -- one of the best-selling artists in music history -- was a busy girl.

Achieve Success by Building Your Personal Brand
-
6-15-2009
Wake up and smell the industrial revolution. While it might not have the same ring as Coca-Cola or Google, your own name is an equally important brand. In today’s constantly shifting marketplace, where more people are competing for fewer positions, put yourself in harried employers’ shoes and ask, what makes you stand out from the crowd? Granted, chest-thumping egotism remains as distasteful as ever, but 2009’s most successful professionals recognize a simple principle that advertisers grasped long ago: In modern society’s hyperkinetic, visually oriented culture, how you package and present yourself speaks volumes. Here’s how, with little cost and effort, you can multiply personal equity tenfold.
