Grammy Awards

American Way StaffCritical success has somewhat eluded you over the years, despite your having great commercial success, but be honest: If you don’t get a Grammy for this album, you’re going to hurt somebody, right? No. I’ve been nominated for 14
Grammy Awards, but I’ve only ever won one. So, I’m not really a Grammy kind of guy. What those things really boil down to is what record company you’re with and how big the voting block is. That’s the sad truth. But here’s what I would say: We worked extra hard on this record. Take a song like “Someday” — that song probably had 16 hours of arrangements. Every song was worked in such a way to sound as simple as it possibly could sound. To make it sound effortless, you have to work your butt off. The Lonesome Jubilee was made exactly the same way, but the reason we didn’t make records like that for the past 15 years is that it’s hard.
And more expensive … Well, true. But I don’t think about that. I don’t have any money. I mean, I’ve got money, but I don’t have any. If we went to lunch, you’d have to buy. I don’t have a wallet. I don’t have a driver’s license. I don’t have an ID card. I don’t have a cell phone. I don’t have credit cards. But if I’m with my wife, I’m cookin’, baby.
