Hamburg | German restaurant | Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten | Berlin

Heidi Klum's Germany

by Mark Seal

"When I think about Hamburg, I think about marinated herring with cream sauce, onions, and potatoes, which is a specialty of Hamburg. It's a seaside city, so they're big with fish. The herring is especially amazing. You can get great herring at the Fischerhaus, a really good traditional German restaurant. If you want Italian, it's Toto. For Asian, Sands is good. If you don't want a traditional sit-down dinner and want more of a lounge/restaurant/bar, there's Indochine, a Vietnamese place with music."

LODGING
"I would stay at the Raffles Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. It's right on inner Alster Lake, which is lovely, so you can see the water, the boats. It comes in from the ocean really."

SUNDAY

BREAKFAST
"The Regent Schlosshotel (pictured) is a five-star castle hotel in Berlin's Grunewald area. It's beautiful and very hidden away, and the interior was redone by Karl Lagerfeld. Breakfast at the restaurant, Le Jardin, there is amazing. Even if I don't stay there, I go there for breakfast."

SHOPPING\
"Berlin is famous for the KaDeWe, a huge shopping house. They have everything - the most exquisite food cart on the top floor, every designer, shoes, the best creams, jewelry, accessories. If you're having a dinner party with people you want to impress, you go there and buy a lot of gourmet stuff. It's famous, basically like a Harrods."
