Hawaii is also known for its whale sightings.
Have you seen any?
"You can see them from the beach. You can see them spouting and
stuff, or sometimes jumping up. You catch a tail and so forth.
We've also taken a catamaran out, and you get up pretty close to
them. I don't know if that's smart or not. We've also gone in the
Atlantis submarine off Kona. It's a submarine that holds 30 or 40
people, and you go under for an hour and just cruise the bottom and
look at the fish. My kids are grown now, but they always want to go
back there and do that."
Where do you go shopping?
"There are some good shops in The Kings' Shops, a shopping center
near the Mauna Lani. That's where Roy's is. You can buy the good
vintage Hawaiian shirts, but pretty much that's the only time
you're going to wear them. I don't go there to shop. Hawaii is a
state of mind to me, not a mall. And so when I go there, it's
really to relax, get rejuvenated, and have a good time."
What do you do when you get out of your lounge
chair?
"Swim with the dolphins at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. It's a very
interesting hotel. It's connected by a waterway and you use a water
taxi to get to your room. They have 10 restaurants. After a while,
there's just so much mahi-mahi you can eat. The Hilton has a really
good Italian place and a good sushi restaurant. Having decorated a
few houses in my day, I get off on watching how people do hotels.
This place is unbelievably big. And it's all waterways. It's like
going on a jungle cruise ride at Disneyland, except you get off at
your room. The dolphins are in a water park where, under
supervision, you get in and swim with them. I did it last
year."
