Hotel Derek | Houston | oil heirs | Galleria-district hotel

Lodging News

by Elaine Glusac

HOUSTON HIPS UP

Next-generation oil heirs are arrogant about Houston’s new Hotel Derek. And rightfully so. A more than $12 million renovation of the former Red Lion has turned out the bespoke Derek, with an eclectic style that puts pinstripes on the bedclothes and English wingback chairs on the cowhide rugs. The 314-room, Galleria-district hotel addresses both real needs — guests select their mattress firmness — and surreal ones, including positioning a lobby chaise in front of the fire crackling on a plasma-screen TV. Tailored rooms in rich, dark tones adjoin spacious glass-and-chrome baths. You may never want to leave them, if not for Ling & Javier, the hotel’s restaurant-cum-travelogue combining spicy Cuban and Chinese street food. Rooms from $245. (713) 961-3000, www.hotelderek.com
