Call them the hottest new runway models. Hotel staffers look so sharp lately that we’ve mistaken them for fellow guests. Who’s responsible for adorning these frontline employees? A handful of brand-name designers like Michael Kors, who created wardrobes rather than uniforms for one hotel group because he wondered, Why can’t staff look fabulous? Now distinctive hotels are served by employees who contribute to the visual appeal of the property. — Becca Hensley
Are you a fashionista? Test your designer IQ by matching each hotel uniform to its designer.
1Reflective of the designer’s conservative, sporty touch, this collection of interchangeable blazers, sweaters, tees, and crocheted baby-doll tops allows staff to express their personal style. It debuted at the W Dallas–Victory and is now in 21 other W Hotels worldwide.
2Couture sophistication comes to New York’s urbane Hotel Mela via this creator of red-carpet celebrity wear. Inspired by early James Bond movies, the collection fuses typical menswear pinstripes with feminine accents in crimson and midnight blue. Her designs have been distributed at stores such as Neiman Marcus.
3Celebrating its location in one of Manhattan’s fashion districts, hip Hotel Gansevoort chose to partner with this elegant designer, who creates clean-lined attire with a slightly masculine flair. Varying slightly, the diverse uniforms are united by elements in purple — the hotel’s signature color.
4This designer brings his artistic instincts to NYLO, an emerging brand of mid-price-range boutique-style hotels, the first of which will open next month in Plano, Texas. NYLO Wear, a mix-and-match collection, offers an innovative, chic edge and melds with the hotels’ custom-designed city-savvy environs. Biggest tip ever: You know him from Project Runway.
5Sported at the Kimpton’s sophisticated Hotel Monaco properties, this collection of stylish but practical frontline uniforms was created by a witty designer who manages to elicit the fantastical in every creation. Think fedoras, plum corduroy blazers, and leather gloves.
6Embassy Suites chose this Lafayette 148 designer after his participation in redesigning the hotel’s uniforms on The Apprentice. Channeling a global aesthetic born of his travels, he utilizes a joyful blend of color, pattern, and texture, and has created three collections: Skyline (used, for example, in the Embassy Suites Chicago).
