Beyoncé Knowles' Houston
by
Mark Seal"My mother owns a hair salon called Headliners. I grew up
performing there every week for the people in the salon, trying to
make tips so we could go to Astroworld. We would sing and dance in
the salon. It's still there, only now Headliners is one of the top
salons in
Houston. But it's still like home to me when I'm there,
because I grew up there."
DINNER
"I love Pappadeaux, which has the best seafood I've ever had.
Whenever we have people come to town, we take them to Pappadeaux. A
lot of our deals with record labels and with group members have
been made at Pappadeaux. Whenever we have meetings, that's where we
go. The Pappas family has lots of restaurants in Houston.
Everything that has 'Pappa' in front of it is delicious:
Pappasito's, Pappas Bar-B-Q, Pappas Bros. Steakhouse. Every single
one of them, if it has 'Pappa' in front of it, you're guaranteed a
good meal."
NIGHLIFE
"They have good concerts that are really intimate at the Arena; you
can really feel the artist. I like performing there, too. The
rotating stage is really cool. You have to walk through the
audience to get to the dressing rooms. So if you're in the audience
sitting next to the dressing room, you get to touch the celebrities
or meet them or get really close to them. It's laid-back and really
comfortable."
SUNDAY
BREAKFAST
"I love Shipley's Do-Nuts. You'll find them all over Texas."
EXCURSION
"Kemah is 45 minutes from Houston. It's kind of like a boardwalk,
similar to the San Antonio River Walk, with all kinds of little
shops and restaurants. Down in Galveston, they have nice beach
houses you can rent out in Pirate's Cove. I like to ride the ferry.
They have a little boat that travels to Moody Gardens and back.
Moody Gardens has a beautiful rain forest, an IMAX theater, a nice
pool, and a man-made beach. On Galveston Beach, I like to rent the
bikes and ride on the seawall. Then get dinner at Landry's
Seafood."
