In The Out Islands
by
Janet ThomasSleep/Eat/Drink: You'll get a terrific sense of being remote
here, but two spots meet all your needs. On the sandy side, behold
Cape Santa Maria's (800-663-7090) three-mile crescent of a beach,
one of the world's best. Beachfront cottages with breezy
screened-in porches face your personal slice of paradise. Stella
Maris Resort (800-426-0466) sits high atop a ridge, with dozens of
lodging options scattered throughout a garden estate. A family feel
centers around the clubhouse area with convivial dining, drinking,
and entertainment.
Play: Water, water, everywhere, and lots of time to play in
it. Both resorts can hook you up with serious fishing, diving, and
boat charters. Rent a car and tour the one main road, dotted with
small shops and settlements.
Local Insight: Cottages #1 and #21 (the ultra-private
bookends of the resort) are the most requested at Cape Santa Maria.
Don't miss Elsie Knowles and the straw "factory" in Simms
Settlement for an amazing look at an intricate art.

Other Out Islands
Yes there's more. Many more. How remote can you go? Try Andros (the
world's largest concentration of blue holes equals great diving),
Cat Island (deserted beaches, seclusion), and Great Inagua
(flamingo flocks and a vast national park). Crooked Island,
Acklins, Berry Islands, Mayaguana, Little Inagua, and San Salvador
pretty much round out the Bahama Out Islands - at least the
inhabited ones - and are impressively undeveloped havens for solace
seekers.
