Ever wonder what the person next to
you is listening to? Well, wonder no more.
We asked our readers to tell us what 10 songs they'd put on their
Road Warrior soundtrack, and we got all sorts of great suggestions
- from smooth jazz to tried-and-true '70s classics to obscure
tracks from indie groups like The Beta Band. We immediately added
them all to our MP3 players, and we're sure you'll be doing the
same.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
From Jodie Brinkerhoff, San Francisco
"These Are Days" - 10,000 Maniacs (These are days you'll
remember.)
"Get To Me" - Train (An airplane's better than a camel's back.)
"Somethin' to Believe In" - Shawn Mullins (I'm waiting at the gate
for my bag to be inspected; for some crazy reason I'm always
suspected.)
"Traffic Jam" - James Taylor (Damn this traffic jam/how I hate to
be late.)
"(Nice to Meet You) Anyway" - Gavin DeGraw (How I feel about
certain sales prospects when there's no chance of a sale.)
"Thunder Road" - Bruce Springsteen (Roll down the window and let
the wind blow back your hair.)
"Break Down Here" - Julie Roberts (Out in the middle of nowhere, I
know I'm in trouble if these wheels stop rollin'.)
"Stay or Leave" - Dave Matthews Band (Stay or leave. I want you not
to go - but you should.)
"The Long Way Home" - Norah Jones
(Always take the long way home.)
"Someone Like You" - Dina Carroll (I've been traveling all around
the world, waiting for you to come through. / I've been up and down
the highway, in all kinds of foreign lands.)
BONUS TRACKS
"Home Again" - Hootie & the Blowfish
"Amen" - Josh Kelly (The open road for traveling souls.)
From LaRhesa Pollock, San Antonio, Texas
"Respect" - Aretha Franklin (A good way to approach your fellow
passengers -
giving respect.)
"Leaving on a Jet Plane" - John Denver (How I feel when I'm really
not looking forward to a particular trip.)
"Fly Me To The Moon" - Frank Sinatra (My carefree, happy song.)
"Soak Up the Sun" - Sheryl Crow (My heading-home-for-the-weekend
song.)
"Kokomo" - The Beach Boys (Beach Boys song we sing when we are
beach-bound.)
"It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" - Alan Jackson (For those few
occasions when I just must have a mimosa in first class.)
"I Am Woman" - Helen Reddy (Good mantra when you want to lose your
cool, but think the better of it.)
"Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" - any version (Especially good
for those really long flights.)
"Cat's in the Cradle" - Harry Chapin (The song I pray my kids never
sing to me because I had to travel. It helps me engage the minute I
get home!)
"Ships" - Barry Manilow (The song I sing to my husband to tease him
when I have to travel a lot.)
From Scott Evans, Plano, Texas
"Island in the Sun" - Weezer (Perfect for getting you in the mood
for a beach trip.)
"Viva Las Vegas" - Elvis (When flying into Vegas, this song
perfectly matches the city lights I see through the window.)
"Grapefruit/Juicy Fruit" - Jimmy Buffett (I can relate to this song
about a guy wishing his wife were with him on his trip.)
"3 x 5" - John Mayer (To me, this is a great song about a guy
soaking in everything he sees on a trip.)
"If I Had $1,000,000" - Barenaked Ladies (Because if I had
$1,000,000, I would travel the world.)
"Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" - Counting Crows (The driving beat of this
song is great to listen to while watching the world go by outside
the plane window.)
"Tripping Billies" - Dave Mathews Band (I love the chorus, "Eat,
drink, and be merry.")
"Today" - Smashing Pumpkins (Because when I'm traveling, "Today is
the greatest day I've ever known.")
"Southern Cross" - Crosby, Stills & Nash (To me, this song is
about traveling and seeing things for the first time, and being
awed by their beauty.)
"One Particular Harbor" - Jimmy Buffett (Again, Buffett sings about
forgetting work, traveling to far-off lands, and enjoying every
second of it!)
From Peter Waterman, Garland, Texas
"Comfortably Numb" (live) - Pink Floyd (It's always important to be
in the right mind-set.)
"Under Pressure" - Queen (Need I say more?)
"Pour Some Sugar on Me" - Def Leppard (This reminds me of the '80s,
when the last thing on my mind was the next time I'd have to step
foot on an airplane.)
"Don't Come Around Here No More" - Tom Petty & the
Heartbreakers (It's just a great tune.)
"Foreplay/Long Time" - Boston (You have to have a little
rock-and-roll in your life.)
"Where the Streets Have No Name" - U2 (Isn't this always the case
when you travel?)
"Southside" - Moby (Anyone who calls himself Moby deserves
inclusion on this list.)
"November Rain" - Guns N' Roses (Every three-hour flight needs a
solid, nine-minute rock anthem.)
"In Your Eyes" - Peter Gabriel (Another great tune.)
"Paradise By The Dashboard Light" -
Meat Loaf (Because there's nothing like knowing that you're home
once you see your dashboard lights.)
