Sick of the same old romantic fare? Check out these six off-beat love stories, which will tug at your heartstrings without resorting to cliché.
Benny & Joon Johnny Depp channels his inner Buster Keaton in this tale of a quirky young man who falls for a mentally ill artist (Mary Stuart Masterson). The film is a moving testament to love’s power to overcome obstacles. Lost in Translation A brief but intimate -- though never intimate -- affair in Tokyo helps ease the respective heartaches of a middle-aged actor (Bill Murray) and a lonely newlywed (Scarlett Johansson) and rejuvenates the two in a gratifying and magical way. The Moderns Witty dialogue, lush cinematography, and a stellar cast (including Keith Carradine, Linda Fiorentino, and Geraldine Chaplin) round out this Alan Rudolph drama about a love triangle between an artist, an art collector, and their muse in 1926 Paris. Oscar and Lucinda The denouement of this enchanting, off-kilter love story about a sensitive priest (Ralph Fiennes) and a wealthy store owner (Cate Blanchett) who build a glass church to transport to a small village will stick with you forever. Strapless A wealthy entrepreneur (Bruno Ganz) charms a newly single doctor (Blair Brown) while on vacation in Europe, but personality clashes and his deceptive past hinder their romance. The film shows that love sometimes means making compromises. WALL-E Though our robot protagonists -- WALL-E, an earthbound trash compactor, and EVE, a space-traveling, laser-firing reconnaissance drone -- barely share any dialogue, their actions speak volumes about their affection for one another.
