Ka''anapali Beach | Haleakala crater | Hawaii

Mark Seal"The Rusty Harpoon has a great waffle bar. That's the place the
kids always like. It's open-air, so you can eat breakfast and look
out at the ocean. You have to have the Kona coffee. That's how you
get up in the morning after those mai tais. Have a couple of cups
of the local coffee and take a morning dip in the ocean before
breakfast. That's my way to start the morning."
Beach
"Ka'anapali Beach is the best. It has clean sand and waves that
aren't too big. I don't need a 40-foot wave to go bodysurfing,
although I'm a big boy. This beach seems to appeal to everyone.
It's wide enough so that you can throw a Frisbee or football. It's
great for families, great for couples, great for singles. At the
end of Ka'anapali Beach is Black Rock, a natural cove where they
dive off the cliffs every day at sunset. If you snorkel 50 feet
out, you'll see everything from huge turtles to the most colorful
fish ever, like the humuhumunukunukuapua'a, the state fish of
Hawaii. At 7 years old, my kids could pronounce it."
Tour
"A helicopter ride over Maui is a must. You'll see the Iao Needle,
which is spectacular, with waterfalls and the thinnest pointed
mountain in the world. You'll go over Lahaina and out to Hana and
Kipahulu, where [Charles] Lindbergh's grave is located. You'll see
the Pools of Oheo Gulch and the winding roads and the beautiful
countryside. Then, you'll go up and around the Haleakala crater.
That's an unbelievable vista. Haleakala is a combination of colors
when the sun hits it. It's a pretty big crater and you're just
happy that it's not active."
