achtung! our best bets in berlin

lodging
artemisia
, moderate, 011-49-30-873-89-05. hit the bricks, boys; this pleasant pension is strictly for the ladies. in addition to the minimal, modern accommodations, there's an ample conference room for female biz travelers and a sunny rooftop terrace for those simply seeking a little r&r.

hotel de rome, expensive, 011-44-20-7321-2626. opening in summer 2006, this new luxe hotel from the folks at rocco forte hotels inhabits what was once the headquarters of dresdner bank. so where board members once officed, you can sleep, and where the vault once stood, you can sauna and swim.

propeller island city lodge, moderate, 011-49-30-891-9016. if you find bedtime boring, this place will change your mind. from the imagination of artist lars stroschen comes a complex of rooms that feature everything from mirrored walls to slanted floors. more museum than hotel, it's definitely worth the price of admission, although we can't say we'd get a lick of sleep in the gruft room, which is punctuated by a pair of coffins.

dining
konnopke
, inexpensive. what's berlin without bratwurst? you can find it in any number of places, but one of the oldest and best purveyors of the city's signature sausage, called currywurst, is this tiny takeout stand under the subway tracks. the spicy link with curried tomato sauce is so good, it even inspired one visitor to make a film about it (www.bestofthewurst.com).
