WE SAID...
Where we mix and mingle in Madrid
LODGING
Hotel Plaza Mayor
moderate, 011-34-91-360-0606.
Ever slept in a convent before? The former Iglesia de la Santa Cruz
(Church of the Holy Cross) was remodeled seven years ago into this
stylish hotel in
Madrid's quaint historic quarter.
Hotel Tryp Ambassador
expensive, 011-34-91-541-6700.
Old World charm mingles with modern-day amenities at the Tryp, part
of the Sol Meliá chain. Even better is its locale, within walking
distance of the Teatro de la Opera, Palacio Real, and Calle Gran
Vía.
DINING
Al Natural
moderate, 011-34-91-369-4709.
Given
Spain's love of all things carne, Madrid can be a tough place
for vegetarians. But if you've gotta get your greens, Al Natural is
the place, especially for the yummy mushroom and spinach pie.
Botín
expensive, 011-34-91-366-4217.
Guinness lists Botín as the world's oldest restaurant (it dates
back to 1725). Perhaps that's why it's a tad touristy. Still, it's
worth a visit to sample the conchinillo asado (roast suckling pig)
and cordero asado (roast lamb) and check out the centuries-old
cast-iron ovens.
