For a dose of art that makes you smile, see “Marc Chagall,” a new exhibit headlining the SAN FRANCISCO MU­SEUM OF MODERN ART. Cartoonist of the unconscious, Russian-born painter Chagall used bright colors in surrealist topics that celebrate the joy of living. The first retrospective since the artist’s death in 1985 subdivides his portfolio into residency periods in Russia, France, the U.S., and again in Provence, exhibiting 80 paintings and 40 works on paper — many never before seen stateside.
