Oklahoma, and
Lubbock,
Texas, may not leap to mind when you’re talking about great art, but two
Southwest venues draw stares this month with eye-catching exhibits. Tulsa’s
Philbrook Museum of Art (800-324-7941,
www.philbrook.org) has unveiled a collection of contemporary art featuring the work of such 20th-century masters as Miro, Picasso, Bacon, and Leger. The exhibit, on loan from the
Contemporary Art Museum in
Caracas,
Venezuela, runs through July 28. Meanwhile, Lubbock’s
Museum of Texas Tech University (866-803-6873,
www.ttu.edu/~museum) has turned the spotlight on 31 medieval frescoes from the Vatican Museums collection. On view through September 15, they include paintings of Saint Catherine and Saint Benedict. Just goes to show you the Plains aren’t so plain after all. —
