New York Mets | San Francisco Giants | Mike Piazza | player
Heavy Hitters
by
James E. MayfieldGoing into his 11th season in the Majors,
New York Mets catcher
Mike Piazza has only batted under .300 once in his
illustrious career - his rookie year. Look for Piazza, a great
all-around player, to add to last year's 36 trips around the bags
and 94 RBIs. Back in December, the Mets added former MVP
Mo
Vaughn to their roster in a trade with the
Anaheim Angels. This
could be a big year for the big man (he goes about 270), but only
if he can stay healthy - he missed all of 2001 due to a torn bicep.
Keep close tabs on another Mets player, switch-hitter
Roberto
Alomar. Picked up in the off-season, the second baseman
finished last year in a
Cleveland uniform with a .336 average. As
the 2002 lineup takes shape, it's clear this could be a huge year
for the other New York team. Can you say "Subway Series Part
2"?
What do you do after winning the World Series and hitting a
career-best 33 home runs? If you're
Reggie Sanders, you ink
a one-year deal with the
San Francisco Giants. The Giants will be
his fifth team in as many years, but that doesn't seem to bother
the 34-year-old outfielder. "I had other opportunities this year,
but something in my heart tells me the Giants are the best fit and
have the best chance to win a world championship," he says.
