WHERE TO SLEEP: If castles make you wistful for your own royal experience, check in to the Palácio de Seteais (011-351-219-233-200), a former 18th-century palace turned five-star hotel. Ideal for families is the Pensão Residencial Sintra (011-351-219-230-738), which boasts a swimming pool, mountain views, and picturesque country walks nearby.

WHERE TO EAT: One of the less pricey places in town, Restaurante Dom Pedro (011-351-219-231-099), with its grilled fish and meat dishes, is a local’s favorite. Restaurante Pateo do Garrett (011-351-219-243-380), a 10-minute walk — uphill — from the center of town, specializes in well-priced Portuguese cuisine.
