American Way StaffThe March 1 column was a doozy — 48 personal pronouns (78 percent of the sentences included personal pronouns). Her personal best, however, was 50-plus (in a column from 2005). With regard to personal pronouns, poor
Jim Shahin and
Gerard Arpey aren’t even in the same country as Burns.
The preceding not-so-tongue-in-cheek comments were a not-so-flattering way to say that we would like to be entertained and informed and have some thought-stretching ideas thrown our way rather than read a personal diary or a personal stream of (un)consciousness.
Overall, the magazine is excellent, and it’s proof of a good leader who surrounds herself with very talented people. Ms. Burns, please congratulate the staff on a job well done, and keep up the good work.
Ron Cowell, Flower Mound, TexasDear Ron: While we have taken your criticism to heart, we’d like to point out that the world would be a much poorer place if not for personal pronouns: Films like Me, Myself and Irene and The King and I would never exist, nor would songs like “That’s What I Like about You,” not to mention books like He’s Just Not That into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys (which, come to think of it, pretty much sums up your attitude toward Sherri’s column).
