Santiago Calatrava | Frank Gehry | Bilbao | Valencia
A Visual Feast

Frank Gehry did for
Bilbao,
Santiago Calatrava has done for another unsung Spanish city,
Valencia. This month, the architect of Athens’s Olympic Stadium debuts his
metal, trencadís tile, and white concrete helmet-shaped Palace of the Arts — home to four theaters. It’s the last out-there star in Calatrava’s futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, a constellation including an eye-shaped planetarium, a promenade of more than 100 arches, an underground aquarium, and a science museum that resembles a dinosaur’s spine.
