Rural Rescue

When Massachusetts developers threatened to pave paradise — in this case, a 288-acre farm in the town of Groton — millionaire and Geotel Computer founder Steven Webber charged to the rural rescue, buying the property and earning a standing ovation at the town meeting. The Webber family has since opened The Gibbet Hill Grill in a century-old barn on a cattle farm — and the standing ovation seems to be continuing. Dinner there requires a 40-mile drive northwest of Boston, but foodies and antisprawl activists alike salute the menu of Angus steaks, New England chicken potpie, and baked scallop-and-lobster casserole.
