Heavy Metal

Ben HewittThe summer's best motorcycles, rallies,
and roads
What you drive this summer is, of course, entirely up to you. But
allow us to at least make a suggestion: This year, as winter's
chill has finally surrendered to spring's sun-washed warmth, hollow
out a spot in the garage and park your car.
Why? Because (admit it) you've always wanted to ride a motorcycle -
the wind a soft, warm slap on your cheeks, the sky an infinite
brush of blue above, the road rolling below close enough to touch.
You've always wanted to rumble away from stoplights, feeling the
jealous gaze of passersby confined by either car or sidewalk.
You've always wanted to know the unbridled rush of 150 horsepower
packed into a mere 500 pounds of
metal,
oil, and
rubber.
Whether you've wanted all or just one of these things, it all boils
down to this: Riding a motorcycle feels like freedom defined, and
that's a feeling you can't ever get enough of.
If you've been waiting to buy a bike, now's the time. The recent
renaissance of boutique brands such as Ducati and Triumph is
bringing ever more desirable bikes to our shores. Couple these with
the ever-popular offerings from Harley, BMW, and the Japanese
quartet of
Honda, Kawasaki,
Suzuki, and
Yamaha, and you'll find a
bike for any road or reason.
So park that car. After all, the poor thing's been hauling those
two extra wheels around since the day it was born. It needs the
rest.
