Laps Of Luxury
by
Larry Olmsted Swimming pools are making a big splash,
as resorts invest millions to build larger, more exotic water
features.
Before you take the plunge and book your next resort vacation, be
sure to ask about the swimming pool. While pools as entertainment
have long been standard practice at Hawaiian resorts, they have
been slower to catch on elsewhere. But now that resort
golf courses
and spas have become ubiquitous, pools are the new way to make a
splash with customers. The Fairmont
Scottsdale Princess in
Scottsdale,
Arizona, for example, recently spent $4 million to
build a new "water feature" (with a price tag like that, the term
"pool" no longer seems adequate). Responding to "demand from the
family market," the resort's Sue Kavanagh explains, "Travelers are
getting more savvy, and while we've always had three nice pools, we
needed something more creative."
The Scottsdale Princess is hardly alone in building a fabulous
water facility. See for yourself with these 10 standout pools.

A cool $12 million went into the resort's "fantasy complex," which
features all the favorites: waterfalls, water slides, wading pools,
a children's pool, and numerous whirlpool tubs. The unique touch? A
lap pool for serious swimmers. If you think you've seen this one
before, you may have - it was in the Billy Crystal film Analyze
This. $369-$539; (800) 999-9898;
