More Bands Reuniting and
Returning to the Road This Summer
Crowded House
In: Founding members Neil Finn and Nick
Seymour along with keyboardist Mark Hart and new drummer Matt
Sherrod.
Out: Neil's brother Tim won't be on hand
(unless he pops up as a guest), and original drummer Paul Hester,
who passed away in 2005, will be missed behind the kit.
Set-list requests: Solo stuff by Neil (and,
if he shows up, Tim); old, rare, and new (from the just-released
Time on Earth album) material; and a nod to the Split Enz, the Finn
brothers' first band, would do nicely.
To get psyched for the show: Watch the DVD
Farewell to the World, which captures the
group's final show, a November 24, 1996, gig in Sydney.
Genesis
In: Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Mike
Rutherford.
Out: Though Peter "Sledgehammer" Gabriel
was part of the original lineup, he has steered fairly clear of the
outfit since Phil Collins came out from behind the drum kit to take
over on vocals. Guitarist Steve Hackett also left, and Genesis
became a trio that released the self-
explanatory And Then There Were Three in
1978.
Set-list requests: Please, no "Illegal
Alien." Stick to the stuff off of Abacab and Duke, and if you must
throw in some solo material, lean more toward the "I Don't Care
Anymore" side of things than anything by Mike & the
Mechanics.
To get psyched for the show: The track list
of 1982's Genesis: Three Sides Live
includes opener "Turn It On Again" and "Follow You Follow Me" and
should be enough to properly get you into the live-show state of
mind.
The Stooges
In: Iggy Pop, Ron Asheton, and Scott
Asheton. Minutemen bassist Mike Watt played on their new album, The
Weirdness, but they have yet to name the touring bassist.
Out: Late original bassist Dave
Alexander.
Set-list requests: Anything off of their
John Cale-produced 1969 self-titled debut; the follow-up,
Fun House; or the just-released
The Weirdness. Oh heck, Iggy,
anything.
To get psyched for the show: Listen to the
Uncle Tupelo cover and original Stooges version of "I Wanna Be Your
Dog" back-to-back. Or any Strokes tune.
Smashing Pumpkins
In: Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin.
Out: Can it truly be called a reunion if
two of the founding members aren't involved? Sometimes, but even
with Corgan's vocals and Chamberlin's frenetic drumming, it's hard
to picture the Pumpkins sans D'Arcy Wretzky and James Iha.
Set-list requests: Anything and everything
off Gish, then maybe the B-side "Blue," and
then back to Gish.
To get psyched for the show: Spend some
time with the band's 1994 DVD Vieuphoria,
which contains songs off Gish and
Siamese Dream, the original foursome's best
records.
Rage Against the Machine
In: Singer Zack de la Rocha, guitarist Tom
Morello, drummer Brad Wilk, and bassist Tim Commerford.
Out: No one. These are the original members
who formed the band in L.A. in 1991.
Set-list requests: Anything and everything
off the quartet's outstanding 1992 self-titled debut.
To get psyched for the show: Energy drinks.
Lots of energy drinks.
Dinosaur Jr.
In: J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph, the
three founding members.
Out: Nobody.
Set-list requests: Is it too much to ask
for them to bust out their Cure cover, "Just Like Heaven"?
To get psyched for the show: Get their new
album, Beyond, and mix with a little
Green Mind and Where You
Been.
