PRESENTING THE 2003 STARS OF BUSINESS
TRAVEL, THE WINNERS OF OUR SECOND ANNUAL ROAD WARRIOR
SEARCH
From more than 8,000 entries American Way chose these five masters
of the travel universe. Read on to see how they juggle work,
family, and travel with humor and style.
We embarked on this year's Road Warrior Search with some
trepidation. It would be the second time we asked
American
Way readers to share their travel stories and philosophies,
with the inducement of a Grand Prize
Lincoln Navigator. Like last
year, we wanted to find active business travelers with wit and
wisdom to share with other readers. But what if finding last year's
slate of winners was nothing but beginner's luck?
We need not have worried. This time out, we collected 8,000-plus
entries, over a thousand more than last year, and they were as
thoughtful - and thought-provoking - as the previous set.
And as diverse: We heard from a rabbi, a priest, doctors, lawyers,
consultants, artists, social workers, military personnel, even a
professional clown. Our entrants quoted Eliot and Emily Dickinson,
Ralph Waldo Emerson and Calvin and Hobbes; they made us laugh and
touched us with their philosophical musings; they gave us enough
travel advice to fill an encyclopedia.
It took months to read them all and whittle our favorites down to a
list of 20 finalists. Then, after we subjected each finalist to an
audiotaped question-and-answer session, the judges listened to the
interviews to choose five winners. While all 20 clearly had
mastered the Road Warrior lifestyle, each of the winners had that
certain something that put him or her on top.
In the following, you'll meet the five winners and more than a
dozen other finalists. Who knows, perhaps next year you'll be among
them.
